A recent fire at a South Korean manufacturing plant has prompted concern about Galaxy S5 launch delays, but the phone maker says the incident should not impact the device's rollout.
"We will do our utmost to help stabilize DAP Corporation's operations," Samsung said in a statement. "In the meantime, we do not expect any production delays of the Galaxy S5, as we rely on multiple contractors."
The fire at DAP Corporation was detected around 7 a.m. Sunday, and caused about $1 billion in equipment damage, despite the efforts of 287 firefighters and 81 vehicles, who battled the blaze for six hours, a translated Asia News Agency report said.
The Anseong, South Korea factory specializes in printed circuit board (PCBs).
But while the fire might not delay the Galaxy S5 rollout, Samsung is also facing a 45-day ban on local carriers selling phones. As Reuters reported, the Korean telecom minister on Friday issued the injunction that prohibits SK Telecom Co. Ltd., KT Corp., and LG UPlus Corp. from recruiting new customers or replacing phones between March 13 and May 19. The move came after the carriers attempted to illegally subsidize handsets.
The Galaxy S5 is scheduled for an April rollout in the U.S., and the company is offering a number of "Samsung Galaxy Gifts" to entice buyers, including free premium subscriptions, in-app purchases, and gratis downloads that total $576.
The South Korean phone maker recently released its official hands-on videos featuring the GS5 (see below), as well as its Gear 2 and Gear Fit wearables.
